The Ultimate Guide to Key Fob Cases for California Drivers
You probably hold your key fob more often than almost anything else you own. Pocket, console, kitchen counter, gym bag, beach blanket, hiking pack. It rides everywhere you go, and it absorbs every drop, scrape, and scratch along the way. For most California drivers, the factory key fob shell starts to show wear within a year or two: faded buttons, hairline cracks around the seam, a worn spot where it rubs against keys or coins in your pocket.
The aftermarket answer to this is usually a silicone cover that slips over the factory case. That works fine for a while. It's not what we build at AJT-Design, and in this guide, we'll explain why.
Our Injection Fob is a complete factory case replacement, not a sleeve. It's made from PC-ABS plastic, designed for the specific vehicle you drive, and engineered to hold up to California's sun, daily handling, and the lifestyle most California drivers actually live. This guide walks through how key fob protection options compare, why material choice matters more in California's climate, and which AJT-Design Injection Fob is right for your truck, SUV, or car

Why Your Key Fob Deserves Better Protection
The factory key fob shell is built to a price point. Automakers spend their R&D budget on the electronics inside, not the plastic outside. The result is a case that looks great on delivery day and starts to wear within months: button silicone fades, the seam between the case halves loosens, the printed logo rubs off, and after enough drops, you'll see hairline stress fractures form around the corners.
That's not just cosmetic. A failed factory case can let dust, water, or pocket lint reach the electronics inside, which means trips to the dealer for replacement programming. Programming a new fob through a dealership often costs more than most aftermarket fob solutions on the market.
There's also the simple fact that you handle this thing constantly. The part you touch every time you walk to your car should not look like it has been through a war by the time the car itself is barely broken in.
The Three Approaches to Key Fob Protection
There are three main ways to protect a key fob, and they are not equivalent. Each solves a different problem.
1. Silicone, TPU, and Leather Covers
This is the dominant category in the aftermarket. You can find silicone, TPU, leather, alloy metal, and carbon fiber covers for nearly every modern vehicle on the road. They slip over the factory case, hugging it tightly, and adding a layer of shock absorption and grip.
The upsides are obvious: low cost, easy install (just stretch it on), and many color options. Some retailers offer over 250 different fitments.
The trade-offs show up over time. Silicone stretches and loses its grip after months of handling. UV exposure breaks down low-quality polymer over time, which in California means a cover that was bright and snug in January can be sticky, faded, and loose by August. Button feel changes because you're now pressing through a second layer. And the factory case underneath keeps wearing the whole time, just hidden from view.
2. Hard-Shell Slip-On Cases
A step up from silicone, hard-shell slip-on cases use carbon fiber, alloy metal, or rigid plastic to snap over the factory shell. Brands like RECON build custom-molded covers for Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, RAM, and Jeep, designed to protect against impact, spills, and grime.
These look more premium than silicone and don't have the stretching problem. But they share two fundamental issues. First, they still add bulk. Your fob is now a fob plus a shell, which means a thicker pocket profile and changed button geometry. Second, they still leave the factory shell underneath, which means whatever happens to that shell over the next five years is still happening, just behind a hard cover.
3. Replacement Cases (Injection Fob)
The third option, and the one AJT-Design builds, is a complete two-piece replacement. The Injection Fob is a two-piece plastic case that replaces the factory case, injection molded of high-strength impact-resistant PC-ABS plastic. The existing valet key, electronics, battery, and seal are reused and packaged into the new case. AJT DESIGN
This is not a cover. There is no factory shell underneath. The new PC-ABS case is the case. Your fob keeps all the same electronics, the same key blade, the same battery, the same remote functions. Only the outer plastic changes. Instead of an annular snap fit, the design bolts together with socket head cap screws for a more rugged and straightforward approach. AJT DESIGN
The result is a fob that is the same size as the original but built to a much higher standard. No added bulk, no sleeve to fall off, no factory shell hiding underneath waiting to crack. It is, simply, a better case.

Is It Legal to Replace Your Key Fob Case in California?
Yes. No provision in the California Vehicle Code restricts the outer case of a key fob. You are not modifying the keyless entry system itself. You are not changing the transponder, the radio frequency, or the encryption. You are only replacing the plastic enclosure that holds the electronics.
This means no smog inspection impact, no DMV registration changes, no insurance disclosure required. The fob continues to lock, unlock, panic, and start the car exactly as before. Your dealer can still service the vehicle, your locksmith can still program a duplicate, and your insurance company has nothing to tell.
This is one of the simplest legal questions in the California aftermarket world. Replacing a key fob shell is a private cosmetic upgrade with no regulatory implications.
Why California Drivers Should Care About Material Choice
California puts unique stress on automotive accessories. The sun in the Central Valley, the Inland Empire, and Coachella regularly pushes interior temperatures past 140°F in parked vehicles. UV exposure on the coast is intense year-round, even in San Francisco's foggy summers. Salt air from the Pacific accelerates corrosion on metals and degrades polymers faster than inland environments.
Silicone, the most common fob cover material, is the worst-performing material in this environment. It stretches when heated and stays stretched. It absorbs UV exposure and turns yellow, then brittle. It picks up oil from skin contact and starts to feel sticky within a year. None of this is theoretical; any California driver who has carried a silicone-covered fob through a full summer has watched it happen.
PC-ABS plastic is the material AJT-Design chose for the Injection Fob, and the choice was deliberate. PC-ABS combines polycarbonate's UV stability and impact resistance with ABS plastic's machinability and color retention. It does not soften meaningfully at typical cabin temperatures, does not yellow under UV exposure, and does not absorb oils or solvents the way silicone does. ABS plastic is a rugged and reliable material that is tough enough for everything from car key covers to industrial and commercial access badges, and PC-ABS is the higher-performance version of that family.
For California specifically, this material choice translates to a fob case that looks the same in five years as it does the day you install it.

Our Top Injection Fob Picks for California Drivers
Here are the Injection Fobs we recommend most often, organized by vehicle platform.
Injection Fob IF020 for 2022+ Tundra and 2024+ Tacoma
This is currently our most-shipped Injection Fob and the flagship of the lineup. It fits 2022+ Tundra and 2024+ Tacoma, with certain other Toyota applications shown in the compatibility photo. Assembly requires a 3/32" Allen key (included), and button sets include "Gate," "Gate/AC," and a blank button to accommodate other versions. The IF020 represents our latest design generation: bolted construction instead of snap fit, configurable button layouts, and the broadest color range in the lineup, including Black, White, Quicksand, Lunar Rock, Army Green, Solar Octane, Terra, and Heritage Blue. AJT DESIGN
Injection Fob IF014 for V2 2016+ Tacoma
For 3rd-gen Tacoma owners on the previous FOB design, the IF014 is the right pick. Same PC-ABS construction, same Made-in-USA build, configured for the specific button layout of the 2016–2023 Tacoma. This is the most common Tacoma in California's daily-driver and overland markets, and the IF014 has thousands of installs across the state already.
Injection Fob IF015 for 2010–2019 5th Gen 4Runner Limited
The 5th-gen 4Runner Limited has its own specific fob configuration that differs from the standard 5th-gen trim, and the IF015 is built to match it precisely. If you drive a 5th gen 4Runner Limited, this is your case. Same PC-ABS construction, same screw-together design, same wide color range.
Injection Fob for 2025+ 4Runner
The new 6th-gen 4Runner is on California roads now, and our 2025+ 4Runner fob case is the matching upgrade for the new fob design. Built to the same standards as every other Injection Fob in the lineup, configured for the 2025+ 4Runner platform.
Injection Fob IF008 for 2008–2014 FJ Cruiser
The FJ Cruiser has one of the most loyal owner bases in the Toyota world, and a lot of those trucks are still on California roads with original key fobs that have seen a decade or more of pocket time. The IF008 is the upgrade for FJ owners who want a fob case that looks as good as the rest of their meticulously maintained truck.
Injection Fob IF018 for 2019+ Chevy/GMC Truck
For 2019+ Silverado and Sierra owners, the IF018 is the truck-specific Injection Fob. PC-ABS construction, screw-together design, configurable button layouts. Chevy and GMC owners get the same Made-in-USA quality as our Toyota lineup, just sized for the GM key fob shape.
Injection Fob IF019 for 2017+ Ford Smart
Ford F-Series, Bronco, and other 2017+ smart fob applications use the IF019. Assembly requires a 7/64" Allen key (included). The valet key may be removed from the knuckle and stored inside the case, with instructions provided. Same PC-ABS material, same bolted construction. AJT DESIGN
Injection Fob IF017 for 2014+ Subaru Smart
Subaru owners in California are everywhere, from Bay Area Outbacks to Lake Tahoe WRXs. The IF017 fits 2014+ Subaru smart fob applications and brings the same factory-replacement upgrade to the Subaru lineup.
Injection Fob IF025 for Jeep Smart
Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator, and Cherokee smart fob applications all get the IF025. For California Jeep owners who run their rigs through Hollister Hills, Hungry Valley, or Rubicon prep trails out of Tahoe, the IF025 is the fob that handles that lifestyle without falling apart.
IF024 AirTag Holder
If you've added an Apple AirTag to your key chain (a common move in California's high-theft urban markets), the IF024 is a dedicated PC-ABS holder for the AirTag. Same material, same construction philosophy, built so the AirTag holder matches the look of your Injection Fob.
How to Install an AJT-Design Injection Fob
Most installations take 5 to 10 minutes. The process is the same across the lineup.
Start by opening your factory key fob case. Each fob model has a different opening method, and we have step-by-step instruction videos for every model in our lineup. Watch the video for your specific fob before you start.
Once the factory case is open, transfer the electronics, battery, valet key, and rubber seal into the new Injection Fob case halves. The electronics are designed to drop into place; there is no soldering, programming, or modification required.
Place the new case halves together, line up the screw holes, and drive in the included socket head cap screws using the supplied Allen key (3/32" or 7/64" depending on your model). Snug them down firmly but do not over-tighten. The PC-ABS plastic threads need pressure, not torque.
One important note: do not use threadlocker such as Loctite on this product. Thread locker chemistry can degrade PC-ABS plastic over time, and the screws hold the case firmly without it. Just install them dry. AJT DESIGN
Test all buttons before you leave the install area. Lock, unlock, panic, and any vehicle-specific functions (tailgate, AC, remote start) should all work exactly as they did with the factory case.
Care and Maintenance in California's Climate
The Injection Fob is essentially maintenance-free, which is one of the reasons we built it.
To clean it, use a microfiber cloth and either water or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Skip harsh solvents and abrasive cleaners; they can dull the surface texture over years of repeated use. The matte finish on most colors hides fingerprints well, so cleaning is more about removing pocket lint and the occasional smudge than serious upkeep.
When the battery eventually needs replacement (usually every 2 to 3 years on most vehicles), the process is simple. Remove the case screws with the Allen key, swap the coin cell battery, place the case halves back together, and drive the screws back in. The same case can be opened and closed dozens of times without wearing the thread engagement.
Avoid leaving the fob on a dashboard in direct sun for extended periods, not because the PC-ABS will fail (it won't), but because the underlying electronics inside any modern key fob are temperature-sensitive. This is true of any fob, factory or aftermarket.
A Small Upgrade You Touch Every Day
Your key fob is the smallest piece of your car you handle every single day, and it is one of the easiest to upgrade. For less than the price of a tank of gas, you can replace the factory shell that started cracking six months in with a PC-ABS case built to last the life of the vehicle.
California puts unique demands on the things we carry. UV, heat, salt air, frequent pocket time, and an outdoor lifestyle that takes our keys everywhere from beach parking lots to mountain trailheads. The Injection Fob is built for that. Silicone covers were not.
Browse our full Injection Fob collection and find the case that fits your vehicle. If you drive a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra, the IF020 is our top pick. For 2025+ 4Runner owners, we have the new platform-specific fob case ready. Not sure which Injection Fob matches your vehicle? Email us at mike@ajtdesign-llc.com, and we'll point you to the right product.
While you're at it, pair the fob upgrade with a billet aluminum shift knob or a full chrome delete kit to bring the rest of your cabin up to the same standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AJT-Design Injection Fob a cover or a replacement?
It is a complete replacement. Our Injection Fob is a two-piece plastic case that replaces the factory case entirely. The original electronics, battery, valet key, and seal transfer into the new case, so all remote and transponder functions work exactly as before.
What is the Injection Fob made of?
Every AJT-Design Injection Fob is injection molded from high-strength, impact-resistant PC-ABS plastic. PC-ABS is more durable than standard ABS and far more UV-stable than silicone covers, making it ideal for California's climate.
Will replacing my key fob case affect my remote functions or transponder?
No. The transponder chip, electronics, and battery all transfer from your factory case into the new case. Lock, unlock, panic, and push-button start functions remain identical. The only thing that changes is the outer shell.
Is replacing a key fob case legal in California?
Yes. California does not regulate the outer case of a key fob. There is no smog, inspection, or registration impact. You are only replacing the plastic shell, not the keyless entry system itself.
How long does installation take?
Most installations take 5 to 10 minutes. Open the factory case (we have instruction videos for each model), transfer the electronics into the new case, and secure with the included socket head cap screws using the included Allen key.
Which vehicles do you make Injection Fobs for?
Our current lineup covers many Toyota platforms (Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, RAV4), Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra (2014–2018, 2019+, 2022+), Ford smart fob applications (2017+), Subaru smart fob (2014+), Jeep smart fob, and we also make an AirTag holder. Check the individual product pages for exact year and model fitment.
Can I use Loctite or thread locker on the screws?
No. We specifically advise against any thread locker, including Loctite. The chemicals in the thread locker can degrade the PC-ABS plastic over time. The screws hold the case firmly without it.
